How Vertical Gardening Can Enhance Senior Living Facilities

Vertical Gardening is a great form of gardening for seniors and senior living facilities as it involves no bending or kneeling which allows those with physical limitations such as being in a wheelchair to enjoy a great, rewarding activity.

But, besides the physical advantages of vertical gardening, having them in senior facilities and nursing homes can have a variety of additional positive benefits to its residents. Here are a few examples:

  • It provides residents an outdoor activity so they aren’t always stuck inside and can experience fresh air. In fact, studies have shown that seniors already experiencing memory loss that experience sunshine and fresh air can improve certain behavioral symptoms of dementia including agitation, aggression, and wandering.
  • It’s an ideal way for residents to socialize with other residents in the home as socializing can help keep the brain sharp and even decrease the risk of getting dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Also consider that many seniors are at the risk of feeling isolated for a variety of reasons including the loss of a spouse. Isolation can lead to depression, which can hopefully be negated by residents socializing with each other while they are vertical gardening.
  • It can elevate residents’ mood and help boost their self-esteem. Vertical gardening gives seniors and those in senior facilities a sense of responsibility as they can actively see the results of their actions. In addition, they can benefit from the results of their work by enjoying the herbs or vegetables they grew themselves.

PLANTPOCKETS, the leader in vertical growbags, recently donated and installed a vertical gardening wall at The Landings facility in Lake Worth, FL and the feedback has been tremendous. In just a short amount of time residents have been able to enjoy all the benefits and joys these special gardens are able to provide.
